  4. Weekend Watch: July 10-12

Here’s a quick look around the PDGA schedule at notable players and tournament plans this weekend.

Prodigy Disc Pro Tour 2020 – Turku

The Euro scene continues to bring some big events post-quarantine. The next Prodigy Disc Pro Tour stop in Turku, Finland has 16 Open players rated above 1000 and the FPO triumvirate of Kristin Tattar, Eveliina Salonen, and Henna Blomroos.

Väinö Mäkelä and Blomroos were victorious at the last PDPT event at Turku in 2018, and both are chasing the lead after one round down. Tattar leads the Open Women’s division, and 991-rated Severi Saviniemi is top of MPO. The young Finn, Saviniemi, is playing some of the best golf of his career having finished second a couple weeks ago at the Prodigy Disc Pro Tour 2020 – Helsinki. His opening round was 1048-rated and he is two strokes ahead of Janne Hirsimäki, and three clear of Seppo Paju, Silver Lätt, and Oskari Vikström.

  5. Video: Eagle McMahon’s Forehand Roller Ace Is Better Than Advertised

    Eagle McMahon Roller Ace

Of all the impressive shots we’ve seen on Simon Lizotte’s vlog series, a guest appearance by Eagle McMahon may have taken over the no. 1 slot.

Playing Hammond Park in Emporia, Kansas after round 2 of the Dynamic Discs Open, Lizotte, McMahon, and Casey White were promoting the upcoming Discmania Mystery Box release on the short course. McMahon used the new disc release, currently unknown, to hit an impressive roller ace up a hill and off a root on the final hole 9.

  17. Video: Europe’s Best On Display At Prodigy Disc Pro Tour 2020 – Tali, Helsinki

Prodigy Disc Pro Tour Tali Helsinki

While we were fawning over the return of competitive disc golf in the States at the Dynamic Discs Open, many of Europe’s top pros were taking on the Prodigy Disc Pro Tour in Tali, Helsinki.

We pick up Open action in round 2 as Jalle Stoor, Albert Tamm, Seppo Paju, and Väinö Mäkelä make up the lead card. You probably won’t understand the commentary, but it doesn’t make the golf less impressive.

Henna Blomroos and Eveliina Salonen headlined the Open Women’s side.

  18. Brodie Smith Withdraws From Dynamic Discs Open

Citing a mix of Lyme disease-related fatigue and sunburn as a side effect of his Lyme medication, doxycycline, Brodie Smith withdrew from the Dynamic Discs Open after completing the second round.

“I was starting to feel poorly on the back 9 yesterday. Thought with a good night’s rest I would be able to turn it around today,” Smith said. “For now I won’t be slinging them discs until I’m healthy.”

Smith shot a 7-0ver par during round 2 to take him to 7-over par overall after an even par opener. He would have been going into the final round tied for 50th.

  25. Jordan Castro Withdraws From Dynamic Discs Open Due To Travel Restrictions

Add Jordan Castro to the list of players who has had to withdraw from this weekend’s Dynamic Discs Open due to travel restrictions put in place by the state of Kansas.

“I have been spending offseason 2.0 in Arizona,” Castro said in a statement. I’m currently in Minnesota safe and healthy.”

Castro confirmed to Ultiworld Disc Golf that he was registered to play in the DDO and had to withdraw. He finished 14th at the 2018 Glass Blown Open on the same course.

  27. Video: Brian Earhart Throws Another Ace In Emporia

Brian Earhart Ace Emporia Country Club

Last year Brian Earhart threw a disc on a frozen rope at the Glass Blown Open to nab an ace on hole 10 at the Emporia Country Club. This year he gets hole 11 during a skins match.

GK Pro caught the forehand skip on the 408-foot, uphill hole with a Zeus. Last year it was slightly downhill with a backhand and a Comet. What’s next year? Thumber?

  28. Video: When You Think About It There Are Too Many Disc Choices

Latitude 64 Beginner Choosing A Disc

Someone’s probably already done this, but just watching a person new to disc golf break down the sheer amount of disc choices from one company is overwhelming.

This Latitude 64 video illustrates how daunting it can be to pick a disc for a beginner, and why those who are established in the sport continue to search for that certain Frisbee that’s going to fly a special way. While I don’t fully agree with the math — color and graphics aren’t important even if we may have preferences — just multiplying the options by mold, plastic, and weight, all characteristics that impact flight, you get hundreds of discs.

And that’s for each disc manufacturer.

  31. Video: Watch AJ Risley’s Game Evolve Over The Years In Goat Hill Compilation

    AJ Risley Goat Hill Evolution

Central Coast Disc Golf put out a compilation of A.J. Risley playing the Goat Hill Park course in the lead-up to this weekend’s Challenge at Goat Hill, Disc Golf Pro Tour Silver Series event, and we have to say it’s not only a great concept but fairly enlightening.

A.J. basically plays against himself at the 2017 Challenge at Goat Hill, 2018 FLYR Open, 2018 Challenge at Goat Hill, and 2019 Challenge at Goat Hill in the footage, while his dad and Challenge TD, Allen, commentates with CCDG’s Ian Anderson.

Over the years you get to see A.J.’s game change through form adjustments and sponsor changes, as well as how he approached shots mentally.
